Spending your money in secret

Why we need the Read the Bills Act

ACTION ITEM

I sent Congress a letter using Downsize DC’s campaign to pass the Read the Bills Act. Please do the same. You may copy or edit my comments…

Last year’s NDAA passage underscores the need for TRANSPARENCY…

* The Senate Armed Services Committee marked-up the bill in secret…

* and denied the public and fellow Senators the chance to give input or propose amendments.

I DO NOT CONSENT to Congress spending over $600 billion of OUR MONEY this way!

The Read the Bills Act would expose bills to the light of day, and gives the public seven days to read and respond to bills before final votes.

That’s how representative government is supposed to work. I demand that you…

* Pass the RTBA.

* Open the committee mark-up process to the public for the NDAA and ALL bills.

Stop acting like a rubber stamp. REPRESENT ME, or step aside for someone who will.

–END OF LETTER–

You can send your letter using DownsizeDC.org’s Educate the Powerful System.

Downsize DC also signed a coalition letter with 51 other groups demanding that Congress have an open process in passing the NDAA. You can read it on our blog.

After you’ve sent a letter, please let us know how much appreciate the Educate the Powerful System. Consider starting a micro-pledge of $1 or $5 or more.

And if you cannot make a contribution, then please share your letter with five friends who are likely to agree. Encourage them to do the same thing you did. We’ll send you a copy of it, to make it easy.

Thank you,
