The Nobel Peace Prize: No Longer About Peace

That sound you heard was not the sound of a rocket exploding into the Lunar South Pole, but was rather Alfred Nobel turning over in his grave. In his will, he requested the remainder of his estate “shall be dealt with in the following way: the capital, invested in safe securities by my executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.” With the Peace Prize to be given “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” Commendable! However, during recent years the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize has become laughable. The announcement of President Barrack Obama as 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner is simply the notorious straw that broke the camel’s back. As reported by the UK Telegraph, “The Norwegian prize committee’s sense of irony is growing ever more sophisticated, as it hinted when it gave the prize in 2002 to comedy ex-president Jimmy Carter, and hinted more strongly when it gave the prize in 2007 to climate-fear-promoting comedy failed-president Al Gore.” In my opinion, the last truly deserving winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was the Dalai Lama in 1989; but I digress.
Officially, selected for the Nobel Peace Prize, “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”; It seems the Norwegian Nobel Committee has selected President Obama for the Peace Prize because of his ”vision”, “appeal” as noted in the Press Release issued Friday. Which partly reads, “In selecting him, the Norwegian Nobel Committee…appear to be endorsing Obama’s appeal for greater multilateral cooperation aimed at tackling the thorniest global problems; conflict, nuclear weapons, climate change. They highlight his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy, and the new climate of dialogue and negotiation that Obama is promoting. Emphasis is also placed on renewed US commitment to international organizations, in particular the United Nations.”
The 2009 “Peace” Prize has been awarded to a man that continues to use military personnel in two unconstitutional, illegal wars that are only promoting more violence, not promoting peace. It has truly become a joke and not a funny joke, more along the lines of that really bad joke that makes you shake your head in disbelief. As Eric Garris of AntiWar.com points out, “So many promoters of war have won the Nobel Peace Prize…Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Kissinger, to name a few.” So, you see, we have truly entered the age of newspeak; “War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. Strength through Unity. Unity through Faith.”
